Acreage Calculator: acres, square feet and hectares

How it's calculated. Acres = square feet ÷ 43,560; hectares = acres × 0.4047; a lot by its sides uses length × width or Heron's formula.
100 × 120 ft lot: 12,000 ft² = 0.2755 acre = 1,333 yd² = 1,115 m² = 0.1115 ha

How we calculate

An acre is 43,560 square feet — the area of a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide. A square chain, 66 × 66 ft, is a tenth of an acre; the grid on the drawing uses it.

By its sides: a rectangle is length × width; a triangle uses Heron's formula; a quadrilateral is split by a diagonal into two triangles, each by Heron. Without the diagonal four sides don't fix the shape.

Conversions: 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,840 yd² = 4,046.86 m² = 0.4047 ha; 1 hectare = 2.471 acres; 1 square mile = 640 acres.

Area
0.2755acres

A 100 × 120 ft lot is 12,000 square feet — 0.2755 acre, 1,333 square yards, 1,115 square meters or 0.1115 hectare. The calculator above turns the sides of a lot into acres, and converts any area between acres, square feet, square yards, square meters, hectares and square miles: type into any field and the rest follow.

How the calculator works

Choose the shape — rectangle, quadrilateral or triangle — and enter its sides. The area appears in every unit, and the drawing shows the lot on a grid of square chains, each a tenth of an acre. To convert a number you already have, type it into the field of its unit.

Where the acre comes from

An acre is the area of a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide: 43,560 square feet. A square chain, 66 × 66 ft, is a tenth of an acre, which makes the grid a quick way to see acreage by eye.

Lots that are not rectangles

A triangle by its three sides uses Heron's formula. A four-sided lot needs a diagonal too — four sides alone can enclose very different areas — and is split into two triangles. For lots with more corners or to draw the shape by hand, use the lot size calculator.

Common mistakes

For lots of any shape, use the Lot Size Calculator; for a room, the Square Footage Calculator.

Questions

How many square feet in an acre?

43,560 square feet — 4,840 square yards or 4,046.86 square meters.

How big is an acre in feet?

Any shape adding up to 43,560 ft²: a square about 208.7 ft on a side, or 66 × 660 ft, a chain by a furlong.

How do I convert hectares to acres?

Multiply by 2.471: 1 hectare is 2.471 acres, and 1 acre is 0.4047 hectare.

How many acres is a 100 × 120 ft lot?

12,000 ft² ÷ 43,560 = 0.275 acre.

How many acres in a square mile?

640 acres — a section in the US Public Land Survey.

How do I find the acreage of a triangular lot?

Enter its three sides: Heron's formula gives the area, divided by 43,560 for acres.
