Countertop Calculator: square feet, slabs and edge

How it's calculated. Area = Σ runs along the walls × depth − inside corners × depth² + island; slabs = (area + backsplash) × 1.15 ÷ slab area.

How we calculate

Runs are measured along the walls. Where two runs meet in an inside corner the square depth × depth is counted twice, so it is subtracted once per corner: an L-shaped 10 + 8 ft kitchen at 25½ in is 18 × 2.125 − 2.125² = 33.7 ft².

The finished edge is the front of the runs (less the corners), the exposed ends and the island all round. The backsplash runs along the walls at the height you enter.

Stone and quartz come in slabs: slabs = (countertop + backsplash) × 1.15 ÷ slab area, the 15 % covering layout and seams. Laminate tops come in 6–12 ft lengths, one per run.

Countertop
33.7ft²

An L-shaped kitchen with runs of 10 and 8 feet at the standard 25½ in depth has 33.7 square feet of countertop — not 38, because the corner square is counted twice when both runs are measured along the walls. With a 4 in backsplash and a sink and cooktop it fits on one jumbo quartz slab; add a 6 × 3 ft island and it takes two. The calculator above works this out for straight, L, U and galley kitchens.

How the calculator works

Choose the layout and measure each run along the wall, then the depth, the exposed ends, the backsplash height and an island if there is one. Pick the material — laminate, granite, quartz or butcher block — and the cutouts. The result is the square footage, the finished edge, the backsplash, the slabs or laminate lengths and the seams.

Corners

Measuring every run along its wall is the easiest way, but where two runs meet in an inside corner the square depth × depth belongs to both. Subtract it once per corner: an L has one, a U two. A galley has none — its two runs face each other.

Edge, backsplash and cutouts

Fabricators charge the finished edge by the foot: the front of the runs less the corners, plus any exposed ends and the island all round. A 4 in backsplash runs along the walls. Each sink and cooktop cutout is a separate charge.

Slabs and lengths

Granite comes in slabs of about 9 × 5 ft, quartz in jumbo slabs of 126 × 63 in (55 ft²). The calculator adds 15 % for layout and seams; the fabricator will lay out the pieces on the actual slabs. Laminate tops come post-formed in 6–12 ft lengths, one per run.

Questions

How do I calculate countertop square footage?

Measure each run along the wall, multiply by the depth, and subtract depth × depth for each inside corner. A 10 + 8 ft L-shaped kitchen at 25½ in: 18 × 2.125 − 2.125² = 33.7 ft².

What is the standard countertop depth?

25½ in over 24 in base cabinets, leaving a 1½ in overhang at the front.

How many slabs of quartz do I need?

Countertop plus backsplash area plus about 15 % for layout and seams, divided by the slab area. A jumbo 126 × 63 in slab is 55 ft²: the 33.7 ft² L-kitchen with a 4 in backsplash takes one, with a 6 × 3 ft island two.

Do I count the sink cutout in the square footage?

No — the cutout is charged separately and the stone removed is waste; count the full area.

How much countertop edge do I need?

The front edge of each run less the corners, plus exposed ends and the island all round.

What lengths does laminate countertop come in?

Post-formed tops come in 6, 8, 10 and 12 ft lengths; corners are joined with miter bolts.
